The Roman “Ad navalia” was the home of a flourishing naval industry that was later named “Varagine” and it became very important in the Middle Ages. It was first dominated by the Marquis of Ponzone then Del Bosco and then it went to Malocelli.
After it was subjected for many years to the Republic of Genoa, in 1227 it became free. Later it underwent battles and it passed to the Sardinia Kingdom after the Vienna Congress.
Varazze is located in a beautiful inlet and it has various beaches and elegant villas that have gardens adorned with palm trees. Varazze attracts all types of tourists allowing one to enjoy a fantastic vacation either in summer or winter.
This great tourist-cultural boom has made Varazze very important and it is known as the “Città delle donne” (City of the women).
Throughout the year Varazze has wonderful manifestations and events. Many revoke the historical past of Varazze that take place within the Medieval castle walls.
Very magnificent is the Dome of St. Ambrosia built in 1535 on the ruins of a Medieval church that still has its Roman-Gothic bell tower. Very interesting is the 17th century Sanctuary of St. Catherine.
Varazze also offers many trips for its tourists. Among the most relaxing is walk to Punta di Invrea that is about 3 kilometers and it goes along the sea that offers a view of rare beauty.
Fro those who love the mountains you can take a trip to the Convento del Deserto located in the nearby valleys and here you can enjoy the beauty of nature.
