How to get there: Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia exit at Albenga and get on the S.S. 582 towards Garessio, after Zuccarello the fork in the road will take you to Castelbianco.
You can also take the Via Aurelia and at Borghetto S. Spirito take the road for Toirano and Balestrino.
It is a small historical center located at the foot of the Rocca Barbena. It is a typical Medieval town and today it still has many of its features and it was the first feudal center of the Neva Valley.
It history is parallel to that of Zuccarello and Castevecchio entered under its jurisdiction in the first half of the 13th century.
For a while it was dominated by Clavesana and Del Carretto then it passed to the Savoy and in the 17th century it went to the Republic of Genoa.
Throughout the years, the inhabitants of the town have tried to maintain the original structure of the town and the restorations carried out didn’t damage the environment that has always been so beautiful in this area.
The Clavesana Castle was built on a rock that carries the place-name of the town and it dominates the entire town and its defensive towers are still intact.
From high above the town you can admire some homes that are perfect examples of Medieval architecture.
Many of the original constructions are still intact after the passing of centuries and this is what makes the town so fascinating.
Worth mentioning is the small Parish Church dell’Assunta that was restructured in the 17th century.
Of great historical and artistic interest is the nearby town of Balestrino that is dominated by a castle that was rebuilt in the 1600’s.
