The charming town of the Alta Val Bormida has Roman origins and it was included in the Marca Aleramica in the 10th century and then it went to Bonifacio del Vasto and that of Del Carretto.
The feudal fort welcomed many noble families and in 1613 it became property of the Republic of Genoa.
Then it followed the history of the Marquis of Finale and that of the King of Spain and then it returned to the Genovese and then to the Savoy family.
Today, Calizzano is a popular summer resort because of its woods, fields, and natural springs.
Very interesting is the natural park that is perfect for adults and children.
Also very interesting is the 16th century Parish Church of St. Lorenzo built on top of a previous Romanic construction where you can admire its bell tower and precious frescos.
Slightly above the church you can admire the 16th century Oratory of St. Giovanni Battista.
You can also admire the Sanctuary della Madonna delle Grazie that has ancient origins and it also has a prestigious 1290 portico.
Of the old 10th century castle of Del Carretto you can admire a few ruins and from this hilltop it dominated the entire valley.
Very fun and enjoyable are the excursions to Monte Spinarda and Monte Settepani and from here you can admire a breathtaking view of the sea and the Val Padana all the way to the Ligurian and Piedmont Alps.
