Logo How to get there: Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia exit at Spotorno and continue along the Via Aurelia towards Savona.

At the foot of Mount St. Elena you will see the town of Bergeggi that is dominated by a superb bell tower.

About 200 meters from the coastal road you can see the small island that was the last asylum of the African Bishop St. Eugenio between the 4th-6th centuries.

In 992 the Bishop of Savona built a Monastery that was given to the Lérins Monks that stayed there until 1252. The ruins of an old church makes us think that the first inhabitants settled near the sea and later moved inland in order to defend themselves form Saracen raids.

Today, Bergeggi is a seaside resort that offers each tourist a picturesque vision of its rocks and natural beauties such as its two Grotte: “Grotta di Bergeggi” and “Grotta dell’Amore.”

The first one you can reach by a street along the sea or by a path and skeletons of the first era of man, utensils and elaborated stones were found.

Very prestigious is the Parish Church of St. Martino Vescovo that is an 18th century reconstruction of a previous 13th century church.

Very interesting are the Towers of Ere built on an elevated area of the promontory as an observatory and Rovere that has Medieval origins.

The small island has an Embattled Tower called “Faro” and the ruins of two ancient 10th century churches. Bergeggi also offers excursions to Mount Mao and to the Capo of Bergeggi that offers breathtaking views.
