| The Vignole territory became part of the Curia di Gavi when the abbots of Precipitano who were also politicians built the “Castrum Principiani” walls. |
It has very ancient origins as highlighted by the archeological findings that tie it with the Libarna settlement, which was an old Roman agglomerate that fell because of natural vicissitudes. Plus its destiny was tied to the Precipitano territory that was the home of a famous Benedictine Abbey founded by Liutprando who was a Lombard king and dedicated to St. Peter. Once the walls were built the religious people wanted castles to be built as well. The first one was called Castello Inferiore and the second Castello Superiore, in fact a tower and parts of the castle can still be admired. |
The Castle of Vignole or (upper rock) was built in the late Roman times and it was surrounded by pits and here you can admire one of the towers. |
