How to get there: Highway A26 Genoa-Alessandria, exit at Ovada and continue along the State Route towards Silvano d’Orba.
This unique town is located in a hilly area between the Piota and Orba Torrents.
It has ancient origins and its history dates back to 1198 and it was known for its Latin place-name “Silvanus” but its name could also derive from “Silvius.” The name Orba comes from the Orts Torrent, which is located on the Northern side of the Ligurian mountains that then meets with the Bormida Torrent. The oldest certificate of Orta is Urba that probably has pre-Roman origins (and it refers to the Local Government of Urbe in the Savona Province).
The productive system of the town has undergone an agricultural and artisan development. In fact, Silvano d’Orba has the largest number of factory workers.
At Silvano d’Orba two homemade distilleries still exist and they make a fantastic grappa that is well known worldwide.
Of great importance is its natural scenery that offers beautiful hills and fields which allows you to enjoy a relaxing walk or bike ride. However, of great interest and beauty is the “strada della costa” that dominates the entire Piota and Orba valley. This path is very spectacular because it runs along the Piota Torrent, therefore one can stop and take a nice refreshing swim.
For our sport lovers, Silvano d’Orba offers a fantastic sporting facility where you can practice almost any sport.
During July the Premio “Ai Bravi Burattini d’Italia,” which is an important cultural event is held. In fact, more than 1200 people from all over Italy participate. This prestigious award is represented by a gold and silver “Faun” that is given every year to three groups that have been selected by a severe jury. During the year 2000 the event benefited from the support of the Local Government as well as the Minister of Fine Arts.
At October, thanks to the Administration of the Local Government in collaboration with the producers and sellers of grappa and wine a magnificent “Wine Festival” will be held. It will last seven days and here you can taste the best white and red wines that are served with typical products of the area.
