The old Libarna |
 |
| The Amphitheater, the theater, the streets, the halls, the stores, the wells, and the numerous residential areas makes this place very unique. In 1820 diggings began and here they discovered important trading centers that were already mentioned in the Tabula Alimentaria by Plinio, Tolomeo, and Traiano. The Ancient Roman Libarna developed in 148 A.C. when the Via Postumia connected Genoa to Aquileia was built. Since it was a passing area its economy depended on the trades that took place, but it also developed farms, handicrafts, and cultivations. |
Its destiny was marked by the fall of the Empire and in the following barbaric invasions the town was completely wiped out. |
The rediscovery occurred during the diggings for the construction of the “Strada Regia dei Giovi” that connected Genoa to the Po Valley. It highlighted the ancient ruins, precious findings, and artifacts such as: mosaic, marble, bronze, and terracotta floors, precious glass objects such as cups, cruets, and perfume bottles and these findings are held in various museums.
Today you can visit the archeological area that is one of the largest in Italy. You can admire a complex that has buildings and streets and all this is located in a beautiful natural background that resembles a park.
