Logo S Cristoforo 4 The plateau of San Cristoforo developed between the two natural torrents of Lemme and Albedosa. The center is compact and it doesn’t have other communities that extend in its small territory, but it has the shape of a strong area that was built around a strategical watch tower. Its origins date back to the Augustan epoch and during the late Middle Ages the function of the Gazzolo Tower became important. In fact, this tower was a defensive structure against the Saracen raids. The urbanistic development also began at this time and it ended in the 14th century. It passes from Marco Obertenga to the lords of Parodi and it experienced a massive presence of the San Siro Monks, During the development of commercial trades between Genoa and Pavia the Gazzolo Tower was denominated San Cristoforo because its inhabitants were faithful to St. Jacob and St. Christopher therefore the Parish Church was entitled Santa Maria in Lemuris. After the separation of the two Saints that protected Gavi, the inhabitants were called “those of St. Christopher.” During the period of the Imperial Feud St. Christopher had a leading role, as a feud of the Oltrgiogo, first with the Spinola family and then the Doria family. The way of life depended on trading and it underwent a negative turning point with the union of Italy because it became an economy of rural nature. Today San Cristoforo can be seen among the green vineyards of quality that produce delicious grapes that make a one of a kind wine.
The Parish Church of St. Christopher Martire was built on the original site of the small chapel in the 16th century and it was restored many times. Very beautiful and prestigious is the statue of St. Christopher and of N.S. del Carmelo. The Church of the Annunziata is of the late Baroque period and it contains a precious alter-piece as well as a statue of “Madonna Bambina” that has very remote origins. Very picturesque are the small chapels scattered throughout the territory and they contribute to the religious and natural beauty of the area. The Parish Church of St. Maria del Lemme is simple and it is a rare example of a sacred building with large spaces.
It is of great architectonic prestige and it is waiting to regain the Christian faith.
