Ovada is a small town of the Alto Monferrato and since its local government confines with Piedmont its vicissitudes are tightly tied to Piedmont and Liguria.

Throughout the course of history Ovada has changed region’s many times.

Its history dates back to Roman times as written by Decimo Bruto to Ciceron. He described that there was a Roman settlement located between the two torrents of Ovada: Orba and Stura.

However, there are no remains of its Roman history.

In fact Piedmont and Liguria fought over Ovada because of its strategical position. It had access to the Turchino pass which was one the routs that went to Genoa by passing the Po Valley.

There were two roads that led to Genoa from the Piedmont and Lombard region: Turchino and Gavi.

Thanks to Ovada’s strategical position it controlled the Turchino road.

During the Middle Ages Ovada changed owners many times, from the Marquis Monferrato to Genoa, from Genoa to Alessandria, and from Genoa to Milan.

With the progressive unification of Piedmont on behalf of the Duke of Savoy, Ovada was fought over between Genoa and the Duke of Savoy even though there were only a few occupations of the Duke of Savoy.

At the end of the Napoleonic period Ovada had become part of the Piedmont region and today its destiny is still divided.

At Ovada you can visit the Parish Church of Assunta and the Parish Church of Antica.

The castle of Ovada was completely destroyed and there are no longer any traces of it past.
