When traveling along the narrow roads of Montaldeo you will be captured by its beauty that can be seen in its palazzos, in its ancient tastes, and the protection of the lovely town. The hills, the terraces, and the vineyards hide natural paths that will take you to far away places. From the top you can enjoy a marvelous view that extends from the Alps to the sea.
The historical vicissitudes intertwine with war-like events between Genoa and Alessandria. A 10th century diploma identifies the town with the place-name Mons Alpherius, while the local government that was in an advanced state of autonomy was named Montaldello.
From the Marquis of Monferrato to the Viscounts from the Genovese to the Sforza, Montaldeo was always dominated by the Trotti noble family for almost 100 years. But the tyranny of Giovan Cristoforo conducted the population of Montaldeo into a revolt that ended with the killing of all the family members except for Sertorio.
In 1530, Giovan Battista Grimaldi bought the feud. But the Doria family brought stability and the rebellious spirit of the Monteldeo population kept the Genovese nobles in constant alarm. During the invasions of the 18th and 19th centuries the population was well prepared.
The Parish Church of St. Martin of Tours is powerful and famous for its unique nave. The Church of St. Michele has late origins and it is immersed in green. The frescos inside portray Angles and Archangels and they are part of an important cultural research that was extended in the Renaissance epoch and in the towns near Monferrato.
There is a legend that states that St. Catherine defended Montaldeo from the Spanish troops that were guided by an inheritor of the Trotti family, and the church is dedicated to this saint from Siena.
However, the castle was the first interpreter of the town. It has an admiring noble architecture and it is one construction. It is a very pleasurable scenery that shows its precious elements such as its beautiful plant life and the immortal trace of the powerful Doria family. Among its artists, the population allows us to relive the figure of a mysterious woman that vanished in a deep cry and then transformed into a long strip of light.
