The territory of Molare extends along the Orba Torrent and it confines with the local government of Cremolino, Ovada, Rossiglione, and Tiglieto.

Just like many other towns of the Monferrato territory, Molare was built at the base of a castle.

The origin of its place-name is still uncertain. Among the many documents the most believable is the one of Casalis that believed the name derived from “saxa molaria.”

In fact, near the Fontana river a millstone quarry existed and this is how it got its name Molare.

The vicissitudes of Molare were subject to the Lady of Malaspina of Cremolino until she died in 1467. It was then subjected to the Marquis of Monferrato that was able to obtain a certain autonomy.

The ancient castle was the home of the Marquis Del Bosco, Malaspina, and Spinola. However there are no longer any traces of the castle, its tower, or its door.

However, of great interest is the castle of the counts Gaioli-Chiabrera and the palazzos of the Marquis Grillo Spinola Gentili and the Marquis Salvago Raggi at Campale. Both are rich masterpieces.

At Molare the old Church of N.S. of Pieve is a national monument and the Gothic-Romantic apse is a true wok of art.

The Baroque 1700 Parish Church contains frescos and it has been decorated with a marble polychrome banisters.

Today Molare is still well-known and remembered for its production of dolcetto. Today, its hills are dominated by the cultivation of vineyards.
