The Ligurian Apennines have always been a natural boundary line between the maritime areas and the areas that are located in the hinterland. Since ancient times crossing this boundary through the “Vie del Sale” meant climbing steep cliffs that would lead to natural passes. However, one also had to face some difficulties such as rigorous paths, wild animals, as well as bandits that often killed mule drivers, merchants, and travelers.
In fact, specific itineraries were designed which were protected in order to make trading goods simpler. These protected roads were named “Gioghi” and it became the safest and most important road that tied the city of Genoa to the Po Valley. However, it underwent many transformations and in the 19th century it became known as the Regia Strada dei Giovi and its surrounding areas that extended from Giovi towards the lower Piedmont Region became known as the “Oltregiogo.”
This area includes:
• The upper and lower valley of the Scrivia Torrent;
• The Pentemina Valley;
• The Vobbia Valley;
• The Borbera Valley;
• The Lemme Valley;
• The Stura Valley;
• The area of Novese and Ovadese.
This territory which has a strong Ligurian tradition includes the cities of Tortona, Acqui Terme, Salice Terme, Valenza, and Alessandria.
This area is rich in history and it has a wonderful food – and – wine tradition making it a great tourist attraction because it is only 30 minutes from Genoa and 50 minutes from Milan allowing its visitors to enjoy hours of relax or a beautiful holiday.
