The Lerma castle is one of the finest of the area.
At the end of the 15th century is construction had ended thanks to Luca Spinola, who was a rich and influential Genovese aristocrat and was made a Knight of Sproni d’oro by Carlo VIII king of France.
The powerful castle that faces the Riccetto piazza has preserved its ancient parts such as the round embattled tower that dominates the Piota Valley.
The body of the castle has a French style and it similar to the castles of Montaldeo, Mornese, and Silvano d’Orba.
On its eastern wall there is a painting of the Spinola coat of arms with the motto “Potius mori quam foedari.”
At the center of the castle there is a 15th century triangular courtyard with arches and columns in stone and mullioned windows with two lights.
Inside there are numerous rooms that display a rich collection of famous paintings.
It has antique furniture of that century.
Very unique is the galley of the coat of arms because on its walls there are 5 frescos of the Spinola coat of arms as well as Doria, Pallavicino, and Neurone.
