How to get there: pass Vignole Borbera (exit at Vignole Borbera Highway A7 Genoa-Serravalle) continue along the State route towards Cantalupo Ligure.
It is the seat of the Comunità Montana Valli Borbera and Spinti. Cantalupo Ligure, just like many other communities of the valley was once a feud of the powerful Genovese Spinola family.
The castle of the town is the only trace of its history. After a mudslide that occurred in the 17th century, the castle was carefully restored and its original shape was reconstructed.
In 1518. because of a lack of legitimate heirs in the Spinola family, the property and destiny of the castle were given to the Adorno dynasty.
At Cantalupo Ligure there are prestigious monuments of artistic importance such as the 20th century Church of St. Catherine that has a unique bell tower. Also of interest are the few ruins of the 14th century Parish Church of St. Giulio. The monument dedicated to the Russian partisan Fiodor Poletaev highlights the violent battle of Cantalupo during WWII.
At Cantalupo traditions have been past down and kept alive. The feast of wheat threshing is celebrated every year at the end of July.
In the community of Borgo Adorno, in an old Medieval “refuge” there is an experimental teaching facility. It was created by the Milanto University and it produces delicious goat milk.
Along the Besante Valley that is always in Cantalupo you can reach Mount Giarolo. From its peak you can admire a fantastic view.
Continuing along the Provincial route you can reach the old “Via del Sale.” It was used as a control station and here you can still find restaurants that offer rooms. In the walls you can see iron rings where the mules were tied.
The name “Ligure” that has been added to the other surrounding communities reminds us when it was under the possession of the lords of Genoa.
