 Logo How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia, exit at La Spezia. This well known commercial town contains a noble past that can be seen in its ancient walls.

It was an ancient domain of the Bishops of Luni, in the 20th century it was fortified, and during the 15th century it was expanded by Castruccio Castracani.

In 1748 it went under the domain of the Republic of Genoa and later that of the Sardinia Kingdom. In the past the port of Luni was filled with earth turning it into a swamp.

Recently interesting structures have been found such as the monuments that highlights the town’s noble history as well as the Fortress of Sarzanella that was rebuilt by the captain Castruccio Castracani. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Val Magra and the sea.

It is a magnificent example of Medieval military architecture and it is the greatest monument of the city and the area.

The Cathedral of St. Maria Assunta dates back to the 13th century and it has a Gothic-Renaissance façade and inside there are prestigious international works of art.

The Romanic Church of St. Andrea was rebuilt in the 14th century and inside you can admire its Baroque style. The Church of St. Francesco dates back to the 13th century and it has two beautiful tombs. The Cittadella was fortified in 1488 and widened about 100 years later and it is a rare example of Medieval defensive architecture.

The shops are very typical and they carry out the traditional woodwork and there are also many places that sell antique pieces, which also carries out events and the most important one is during the second half of August.

The nearby Museum of Luni contains many ancient findings of the Roman city.
