The S.Maria Assunta Cathedral rises over the ancient parish of Saint Basilio.
Its building happens during the following period of the episcopal seat' s move from Luni to Sarzana. |
The jobs started about the end of 13th century and, during the centuries, new developments and expansions follow those. The front, finished in 1355, was later embellished by the rose window realized by Lorenzo Riccomanni da Pietrasanta. During the 15th century the bell tower was erected.
Afterwards, when six chapels were opened, two lateral architectures were added.
Statues representing Pope Sergio IV, S. Eutichiano and Niccolò V, were located about the 18th century. The S. Maria Assunta Cathedral is divided into three naves, upbeared by massive octagonal pilasters. |
The lacunar arch is an important wooden work realized by Pietro Giambelli da Pisa.
Inside the Cathedral are kept precious works like the Reliquary of Christ' s bloodand the Cross painted by Maestro Guglielmo dated 1138. |
