How to get there: From Riomaggiore cross the Via dell’Amore or by train get off at Riomaggiore.
The delightful town of Riomaggiore was founded at the end of the 12th century by a group of rebellious farmers that escaped the tyranny of a “lord” that occupied the town along the coast near Volastra.
In 1276 it went to the Fieschi family and then to the Republic of Genoa. The area of Monarola is located on a enormous dark stone on the sea cliff. It has narrow alleys and terraces that lead you to a very small and beautiful place on the tiny peninsula. The residential areas were built around a castle that was destroyed in 1273. Gardens and steep stairs complete the Ligurian farming architecture that highlights is pastel colored homes that are filled with Ligurian tastes.
The Gothic Parish Church built in 1338 is dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary also known as St. Lorenzo.
Inside, the church is decorated with 15th century triptychs and prestigious bas-reliefs. The small harbor is closed by two rocky spurs and it is extremely picturesque and the sunshine illuminates the town and it is highlighted by beautiful waves.
The vineyards are secular symbols that highlight the fatigue of men and the olive trees that sway in the gentle breeze allow you to reach Volastra, which is a pleasing town located on a rock that offers an enchanting view.
Not far away there is the mystical Sanctuary of NS della Salute and its Romanic structure offers wonderful pieces of art. In the “Vicus Oleaster” or rather in the town of the olive trees you can inhale a magical atmosphere located in a world of silence.
Extremely poetic is the Via dell’Amore that form Riomaggiore leads to Manarola in an extraordinary route that is illuminated by sparkling reflections of the sea.
