In the center of the green Val di Vara a group of communities give life to a territory that is ancient yet modern and it offers a rich cultural and natural patrimony.
How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia, exit at Borghetto Vara. When you reach the town continue along the State route towards La Spezia until you reach the fork for Memola.
Memola is a small green community of the Beverino local government located in the lower and middle part of the Val di Vara. It is tied to the historical vicissitudes of the nearby towns of Pignone and Riccò of the Golfo.
You will reach Pignone after crossing beautifully decorated roads. The town has pre-Roman origins and it was the main Roman road and in the Middle Ages it became of the Malaspina and Fieschi families.
After it was subjected to Genoa in 1276 it became the office of the podestà. It has maintained its original structure intact and its restoration allowed it maintain its primitive shape.
The aromas that fill the air of the town come from healthy traditions. Beverino is made up of different communities such as Memola that is part of the Pasivarma local government. At Riccò del Golfo in the town of Ponzo there are the ruins of the Meideval castle walls and Chapel of St. Bartolomeo.
The Parish Church of St. Croce is also very interesting and its façade has been redone in Baroque style. Of other great architectonical interest are the loggias and porticos. At Pignone there is the 14th century Parish Church of Assunta that was redone in Gothic style and widened in the 18th century.
Very picturesque are the three humpback bridges located on the torrent. At Corvara you can see the ruins of a castle, the entrance door to the town, and the 14th century mystical Church of St. Michele. Also interesting to visit are the mills of Rossi and Memola.
This enchanting country has an intense cultural patrimony among extended cultivated fields, rich woods, and clear waters. All this can be enjoyed in a clean, precious, and healthy environment.
