Logo Ameglia How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia, exit at Sarzana and continue along the State Route 331 towards Ameglia.

In the valley near the Magra River there are many places of great interest. Ameglia is a picturesque Medieval town that is located on a hill beyond the river plain and it still maintains its original aspect.

Its ancient origins can be found at Cafaggio (a pre-Roman necropolis) and at Bocca di Magra there are the ruins of a 1st century A.D. Roman villa.

During Medieval times it was of the Luni Bishops and in 1252 of the Counts of Lavagna and in 1284 it returned to the Bishops. In 1380 it was given to Genoa. The communities of Fiumaretta, Bocca di Magra, and Monte Marcello are very interesting.

Monte Marcello is high above the Gulf of La Spezia while Bocca di Magra is a cute fishing town near the river estuary where you can enjoy an awesome view of the Apuane Alps to the plains of Luni.

Beyond Magra there is Marinella di Sarzana which is a modern and lively sea resort near the Tuscany boundaries. At Ameglia you can visit the 15th century Parish Church of St. Vicenzo and St Anastasio that was rebuilt many times and it has a 16th century portal.

Near the Municipality there are the castle ruins, the ancient residence of the Luni Bishops, traces of the castle walls, and a cylindrical tower. Some Renaissance slate portals adorn the old construction.

At Monte Marcello there is the Parish Church that has a precious 16th century triptych. At Bocca di Magra there is an ancient 1st century A.D. Roman Villa and the ex Fabbricotti Villa where the Chapel contains wooden crosses.

Very interesting to visit is Arcola and Vezzano Ligure because of there urban structure. On the nearby hills there is San Stefano Magra, Nicola, and Ortonovo that highlight the rich Luni plain.
