Logo How to get there: exit at Arma di Taggia (Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia) from the Via Aurelia go up the Valle Argentina and after passing Badalucco you will reach Montalto.

Along the old mule track that went to Carpasio there is the Medieval Bridge della Madonna degli Angeli with three arches. It takes the tourist to a magnificent view point of Montalto Ligure.

Romanesque fairy tales explain the origins of the town and the urban growth of an agglomerate made up of homes. These homes were built in order to protect the love of a young married couple that escaped the bitter “jus primae noctis” carried out by a wicked Count of Badalucco.

Its center has an archaic medieval structure and it developed on the Eastern side of the valley.

There are many alleys, streets, and underground passages that highlight the town’s urban structure. In fact, this makes Montalto the most interesting place from an historical and environmental point of view.

The Church of St. Giorgio located in the cemetery is a precious example of late-Romanic architecture. The portals and mullioned window with two lights give space to the Gothic bell tower.

Inside you can admire 14th century frescos. In the old nucleus towards the Piazza in front of the Parish Church of St. Giovanni Battista that was rebuilt in 1793 you can admire sculptured portals that recall familiar symbols.

The Bell tower is very beautiful and it has a rich artistic patrimony because it contains a polyptych by Ludovico Brea dedicated to St. Giorgio, the Resurrection by Luca Cambiaso as well as other prestigious 17th century pieces of art.

Nearby you can observe the Baroque Oratory of St. Vincenzo Ferreri. Near the town among chestnut trees you will notice the Sanctuary della Madonna dell’Acqua Santa that has a mystical 1546 canvas that portrays the Madonna with Baby Jesus by Manuele Macario.

On the road that goes to Molini di Triora you will see magnificent stone homes that highlight the surrounding rural communities of Glori, Ugello, and the centers of Alaggio that from the bottom of the hill move up to natural mountainous area.
