How to get there: exit at Ventimiglia or Bordighera and take the road that runs along the Nervia Torrent, after passing Dolceacqua you will reach Isolabona.
Among the numerous towns of Val Nervia, Isolabona has a strategical importance. The Doria family made it a charming “island” that was protected by the Castle in the mountains and in the valley by the waters of the Merdanzo River.
The town is unique due to its regular base located on the right hand side of the Valley. The two areas are placed orthogonally and its reference points are the two piazzas.
The small Piazza has a beautiful 1486 octagonal fountain. The large Piazza has the 1641 Parish Church and the Baroque Oratory of St. Croce with a column of Roman origins.
Near the cemetery there is the Romanic Church of St. Giovanni Battista that has a late 15th century fresco that portrays the “Baptism of Christ.”
Other magnificent frescos of the same period can be seen in the Sanctuary of N.S. delle Grazie on the beautiful 1600 Doric arcade.
A true Ligurian monumental patrimony is the 1200 Doria Castle.
It has a hexagonal shape with a magnificent gate that is waiting to be restored in order make the castle homogeneous to the quadrangular tower in slate, which is a symbol of the noble family.
From Isolabona you can go to Monte Alto and Gola di Gonta that is controlled by the mighty Argeleu Castle that the Counts of Ventimiglia built on top of a previous Roman building.
The breathtaking panorama and the various sporting and cultural activities make this place a fantastic tourist attraction.
