How to get there: Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia exit at Imperia.
Since 1923, Imperia is the capital of the province and it developed thanks to the union between Porto Maurizio and Oneglia.
Porto Maurizio has Roman origins and it specialized in maritime activities during the Middle Ages thanks to its trading relations in the East.
The typical aspect of the Ligurian town is unique because of its stairs and today Porto Maurizio is the most intact town on an architectonic level.
Oneglia developed on the hill fortified by Castel Vecchio that is located two kilometers from the sea and it defended the hinterland. Thanks to its olive oil production, Oneglia has become famous and appreciated in all of Europe.
From Imperia you can take fascinating excursions through the Valli dell’Impero that goes to the Aroscia Valley.
At Oneglia, the interesting Cathedral of St. Giovanni Battista has a beautiful cupola and the famous Collegiate Church dell’Amoretti, which makes up for a rare example of Baroque architecture.
In the ancient Palazzo Doria the Admiral Andrea Doria was born and today none of its antique splendor can be admired.
