Foto: Luciano ROSSO Baiardo1 How to get there: exit at San Remo or Arma di Taggia (Highway A10 Ge-Ventimiglia). From the Via Aurelia take the road for Ceriana and then you will reach Baiardo.

Traveling along the magnificent Valle of the Armea Torrent among terraces, olive groves, and vineyards you will come across the Sanctuary della Madonna della Villa that has been entirely frescoed by the Carrega family.

Continuing along the road you will be immersed in chestnut trees at the Passo Gimbegna. This typical mountain landscape welcomes you to the town of Baiardo.

Baiardo is situated between the watershed of Merdanzo and Bonda. Its history goes back to written documents by Statone that highlight the strategical importance of the town.

It was a possession of Oberto of Ventimiglia and then it went to Clavasana of Genoa in 1259. Although it was severely destroyed after the 1887 earthquake the residential area still contains its linear structure of a rural town immersed in a beautiful environment.

The high homes are connected to each other by small arches that decorate the beautiful narrow alleys.

The ancient Porta dei Saraceni is made out of a local stone and it faces the modern neo-romantic Parish Church.

The beautiful Church of St. Nicolò was destroyed by the earthquake however, you can still admire its portals, capitals, and magnificent Medieval sculptures. Today, the sanctuary is an interesting picture gallery while the power of the Counts of Baiardo can be seen in what’s left of the Palazzo Nobiliare.

The Oratory of St. Salvatore has a fantastic polyptych of the Transfiguration of Emanuele Macario that dates back to 1552. Very beautiful is the Valley of the Rio Bonda that exalts the 11th century Romanic Church of St. Giorgio.

There are also nature excursions in the beautiful alpine flora. For those who love trekking there are wonderful excursions near the town or for those that are more prepared they can reach the summit of Mount Ceppo (1627 meters.)

On clear days, Baiardo knows how to capture the heart of anyone with its breathtaking views that goes from Levante to the magical Maritime Alps.
