How to get there: Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia exit at Arma di Taggia.
The charming resort is a community of the nearby Taggia. Its name derives form a cave (Arma in dialect) that was once inhabited in prehistoric times. Today, it is used as the Sanctuary dell’Annunziata that was built near a quadrangular tower during the 16th century.
Taggia is located at the mouth of the Argentina Torrent and it is one of the most popular and oldest towns of the Riviera.
It is still uncertain when the medieval center developed. Maybe it was the Benedictines of Padua and later it joined Albenga. After it was annexed to the Marca Aleramica it underwent the Clavesana domination and in 1228 it went to Genoa.
Today, Taggia is a noble town of the Valle Argentina, located between the beautiful cultivated hills of oranges and olive groves. Arma, is a popular tourist spot that is continually in expansion, however, it doesn’t have a strong historical value.
A must see are the unique caves of the Sanctuary dell’Annunziata. Nearby you can also visit the ruins of a Roman Villa of Bussana.
Taggia highlights its past and a must see is the splendid gothic Church of St. Domenico as well as the Convent that has a beautiful 15th century Cloister. Inside you can admire many pieces of art and precious wooden Crucifixes.
The rich sacred buildings of the Riviera di Ponente can be admired in the 11th century Romanic Church of the Madonna del Canneto and the Church of St. Sebastiano that has a Cloister and a magnificent cross.
There are many traces that highlight Taggia’s medieval past such as the bridge on the Argentina River and the homes located along Via Castaldi and St. Dalmazzo.
