| CISTERCIAN ABBEY |
|
| The monumental complex of Badia, which is known as the Abbey of Santa Maria was founded in 1120 by Pietro Abate from the La Fertè Convent of the Chalons Diocese on Saone. This complex was the first Cistercian community outside of France. It’s common knowledge that the Cistercian community was not only a place of prayer, but through their cultivations and the application of various techniques they created centers that contributed to the economic development of the territory and they strongly connoted it from a physical point of view. The signs of this Cistercian transformation are evident: the plain that was dominated by the Abbey and was once intensely cultivated has now become a grassland. You can observe the areas of cultivation by the patterns of the various grasslands, which are hump-backed so the rain could flow. At the borders of the cultivated areas were the grazing lands, which now blend in with the surrounding woodlands caused by the growing of bushes. Today the woodland has been abandoned, however in the past it provided wood that was necessary for agriculture. Even though the Abbey has maintained its main features such as: the Church, Convent, Cloister, refectory, and agricultural structures, you can observe the structural transformations it underwent throughout time. |
