...The Castle of Montoggio...

Here you can admire the remains of a castle, which is well-known because it is the symbol of the last tragic chapter of the Fieschi conspiracy in 1547. In this castle the Count Gerolamo along with his supporters took refuge after the death of his brother Gianluigi and after the failed conspiracy against the Doria family. The construction of the castle spread from east to west and this is where the entrance was located. The entrance had a large square that was 70 meters in length and 25 meters wide.

The square was surrounded by an enormous embattled and loop-holed castle wall and it ended with a deep moat and beyond this point stood the mighty castle. It was a massive square construction and each corner had a tower that had a circular base and inside it had a rectangle form.

After the castle was captured it was mined and destroyed. The Count and his men were executed near the St. Rocco Chapel.
