La Fontanabuona LA BAIA DELLE FAVOLE Sestri Levante LA TORTA DEI FIESCHI Lavagna
THE HINTERLAND ITINERARY: along the Fontanabuona, Graveglia, Sturla and Aveto valleys, you will come across typical farm products and quarries and on the crest of the hills you will discover the evocative words of Riccardo Bacchelli (“the Ligurian inland festive and benevolent”), or the words of Dante Alighieri who described the “beautiful Fiumana” that flows down from Siestri, which was once the ancient residence of the Fieschi Counts. The splendid traces of this powerful local dynasty can be seen at S. Salvatore with its magnificent Basilica and ancient Palazzo. The Belgian ethnologist Hugo Plomateaux studied the culture of the Garveglia Valley describing the simple life and local dishes. THE HANS CRISTIAN ITINERARY – SESTRI LEVANTE: a fabulous walk along the famous Bay and the enchantment of the Due Mari. Anderson, a well-known Danish short-story writer, stayed a long time at Sestri Levante and every year he is commemorated thanks to the literary contest for teenagers. You will also encounter Givanni De Scalzo, a poet that wrote “Paese tra mare ed ulivi” (A village between sea and olives) and also the composer Richard Wagner, who one night while out at sea was surprised by a storm. The gloomy night of a stormy sea echo in the villages of “Tetralogia.” From Sestri, Guglielmo Marconi launched with success the first worlwide radio signal that has marked our century.

"Intra Siestri e Chiaveris'adima / una fiumana bella"  Dante Alighieri

"Pietre nere che 'usano nella Riviera di Genova in un luogo detto Lavagna', che gli 'architettori' impiegano'lastricare i tetti'" Giovanni Vasari

"...Si schiudon di Sestri i sinuosi lidi"  Francesco Petrarca

THE CITTA’ DEI FIESCHI ITINERARY – LAVAGNA: from the long and beautiful beach of Cavi where Lord George Byron cried the “Pancratium marittimum”, a type of sea-lily that has grown along the coast since then. Here the journey begins towards the city of the Fieschi. The powerful family remembered by Dante in the 19th canto of Purgatory gave the church two Popes, Innocenzo IV and Adriano V. Each year on the 14 of August the wedding feast of Opizzo Fieschi is repeated, celebrated with the famous cake “Torta dei Fieschi.” From the beach to the small harbor of Lavagna, one of the largest tourist attractions in Europe, the poet Paul Valere described the “Leudi” the boats that would transport slates worldwide.
