Gorreto is 550 meters above sea level and it is located in the Trebbia Valley. It is the last town of the Genoa province and it can found along the road that unites Genoa to Piacenza and the Po Valley.
Its origins date back to the 13th century when the feud Malaspina built a castle which no longer exists.
In the 17th century the castle as well as the Ciampi feud were handed over to Centurione family that built various structures such as a palazzo that still dominates with the family name.
Located where the Dorbera and Terenzone torrents meet, on the left side of the Trebbia River, a stronghold was built with walls and a watch tower and it maintained this particular feature up until the beginning of the 20th century.
Although the castle walls were destroyed, from up above you can see the traces of a fortified town.
Like all the local governments of this area, Gorreto is made up of various communities. In fact, its farming culture is reflected in the architecture of ancient settlements and today they have been transformed into tourist resorts because of its uninterrupted relationship with nature.
The surrounding nature is made up of: chestnut, Turkey oak, beech, and acacia woods, the smell of thyme that blooms form the rocks, the magnificent spring season that offers meadow saffron, narcissus, arnicas, lilies, martagon lilies, and buttercups and in the fields you can admire primroses and gentianella’s.
The green grazing and cultivated areas near the residential areas are surrounded by the Cavalla (1327 meters), Carmo (1640 meters), and Antola (1597 meters) mountains that offer a wide range of plant life.
There are also a few architectonic interests of the past such as the above mentioned Palazzo Centurione, the Parish Church St. Catherine that has 15th century wood furniture, Palazzo Doria, and the Church of St. Steven that dates back to the year 1000 in the community of Fontanarossa.
