The physical signs of Genoa’s past are rare except for its pre-Roman defensive works at the summit of Castello.
However, on the other hand there are no written accounts on monumental buildings of that time that can help us visualize a real urban center.
There seems to be a contradiction of its existence by the historical and economic context.
Between the 9th and 11th centuries Genoa didn’t loose it autonomous juridical continuity as stated by a certificate left by Berengario II in 958 that confirms particular local customs.
However it is clear that Genoa is to become the fortress of the Carolingian Empire with the building of a fleet to protect the city from the Arabs, which will become an instrument of Genoa’s commercial and political regain.
Towards the end of the 9th century, walls had been built in the form a horseshoe around the natural port that included the hills of Castello and S. Andrea.
However, today they are seen as an untenable construction but they were idealized by the continental Court that wanted to place there defense system along the Tyrrhenian coast.
