The Casella Train
The best way to visit Casella is by taking the train, located in a picturesque station that was built in the 20’s. The train leaves Genoa from the station in Piazza Manin and it climbs through the hills and nature. It crosses the Valbisagno, Valpolcevera, and Scrivia Valleys and it arrives in Casella about an hour later. The railway line is known as Genoa-Casella as well as the “Trenino di Casella” (small train of Casella). This train is the symbol of the territorial, economic, and touring expansion that overwhelmed the town at the beginning of the 20th century. The first project included a connection not only with Genoa with the Scrivia Valley but also the Torriglia and Trebbia Valleys. However the construction terminated at Casella and today it still remains the final destination of the train. At first the train used coal and then after its inauguration on September 1, 1929 it used electricity. Today the Trenino di Casella is still the main means of transporting tourists not only to Casella but also throughout the entire Scrivia Valley.
