Going along the Entella of the Sturla and Lavagna torrents you will find Carasco.
It is an important road because it is a natural passage that allows you to reach the Fontanbuona, Aveto, and Sturla Valleys. It is a typical town of the Fontanabuona Valley and in the regulations of the Genoese Republic it was put under the jurisdiction of the Chiavari Command.
The residential area is scattered on the left side of the torrent and it is connected to the other side by an old bridge in stone and brick that dates back to the 17th century. It was the estate of relatives of the Fieschi family, counts of Lavagna, and in ancient times it was the estate of Garibaldo and when he lost the throne of Pavia he found refuge in the vally.
Within the territory there were also ruins of the Rivarola castle that was built by the Genoese for protection in the Fieschi territory. Carasco also had a leading role in the revolt of “Viva Maria” in 1797 since the commander of the rebels was born here. His name was Paolo Bacigalupo and he was captured and sentenced to be shot.
For a long time the town’s main source of income was agriculture since it was in a flat area: the Entella plain. Then it went under an industrial transformation and there were signs of various artisan activities as well as small and medium businesses.
This industrial development also caused a growth in population and within ten years the population had doubled. However, Carasco has some surrounding communities such as: Santa Maria, Paggi, Graveglia, and San Pietro.
Its strategical position between the valley and the coast has made it a wonderful weekend getaway for dining out. Although there might not be typical dishes of the place you can be sure that you will savor genuine Ligurian home cooking.
